Definition of the method/technique 

Document review is the stage of discovery prior to production, in which lawyers examine documents to determine if they are relevant, responsive, or privileged. Review is the final step before production, in which a litigant provides discoverable information to its opponent. The purpose of document review, then, is to identify what information falls within the scope of discovery. 

Main uses of the method/technique 

Compilation of relevant information: 

The review of existing documents helps researchers to understand the history, philosophy and operation of the subject under study, in order to organize the information required and necessary in the research process.Useful information to develop other data collection tools for the research process: This means that the existing documents not only help to better understand the topic and the organization that is researching it, but also to formulate questions for interviews, surveys, questionnaires or develop a research guide observation. 

Advantages and disadvantages of using the method/technique

Advantages: 

★ Relatively low-cost 

★ Good source of background data 

★ Discreet 

★ Provides a behind-the-scenes guise at sample population that may not be directly noticeable 

★ May bring up matters not distinguished by other means 

Disadvantages: 

❖ Information may be unsuitable, muddled, unobtainable, or out of date 

❖ Could be biased because of selective subsistence of information 

❖ Information may be unfinished or imprecise 

❖ Can be overwhelming to accumulate, examine, and analyze many documents
